Ships of Troy

(Michael Hanna)
Michael Hanna
The three themes that come together in this piece were all taken from Michael's score for The Trojan Women, an adaptation of Euripides by Sartre. The play, performed with music in the Spring of 2001, tells the story of the women of Troy in the aftermath of the Trojan War. Waiting to be taken as slaves and concubines, they mourn the fate of their husbands, their city, and their way of life. The title comes from the main theme, sung by Hecuba as she beholds the vessels of the Trojan Navy being plundered, stolen, and sunk. These powerful warships were useless against a land siege, Troy fell by deceit, and the wars of men claimed another generation of innocent souls.
